LNC vs Compost / organic matter
Organic matter is foundational to soil health. LNC is complementary — a focused hydraulic intervention rather than a substitute for good organic matter management.
TL;DR
Use both. Compost for soil biology; LNC for water retention. Neither replaces the other.
Compost and organic matter improve soil health across many dimensions — microbial activity, nutrient cycling, organic carbon, aggregate structure. They are foundational. However, in Saudi arid conditions, organic matter mineralizes rapidly (often within 1 year) due to high temperatures and low moisture. This means benefits are real but short-lived, and maintenance inputs at hectare scale are logistically heavy. LNC is a focused, long-duration hydraulic intervention. It does not add organic matter but makes the organic matter already present function more effectively by retaining water in the root zone.
When to use which
Choose LNC when…
- Irrigation volume reduction
- Water-stressed soils where organic inputs mineralize fast
- Situations where biomass logistics at scale are challenging
- Combined deployment alongside compost program
Choose Compost / organic matter when…
- Soil biology restoration
- Organic carbon building
- Nutrient cycling enhancement
- Any sustainable soil program — organic matter is always foundational
Parameter-by-parameter comparison
| Parameter | LNC | Compost / organic matter |
|---|---|---|
| Primary benefit | Water & nutrient retention | Soil biology + OM + nutrients |
| Duration in arid KSA | Up to 5 years | 0.5–1 year (mineralization) |
| Application scale | Tens to hundreds of hectares easy | Volume-intensive |
| Nutrient addition | None direct | Significant |
| Microbial habitat | Indirect (moisture) | Direct — substrate + food |
| Complementary? | Yes — use both | Yes — use both |
Common questions
- Should I choose LNC over compost?
- No. Use both, if you can. They address different layers of soil performance. LNC alone does not replace good organic matter management; organic matter alone does not deliver LNC's hydraulic effect.
- Does LNC reduce the need for compost?
- Not exactly. LNC makes organic matter more effective by retaining water and nutrients in the root zone, which can indirectly reduce compost application frequency. But periodic organic matter inputs remain best practice.
